If you enjoy stark Scandanavian crime/mystery writers such as Henning Mankell, give Arnuldar Indridason a try. He just published the fourth novel in his crime series starring detective Erlendur Sveinsson (The series begins with Jar City). Set in Iceland, this series is gripping and intelligent, and provides a fascinating look at life in Iceland. His characters are flawed, damaged and true to life.

A Quick Book Review from Jennifer
I’m about 60 pages until the end of the new Pam Jenoff novel, Almost Home, and I can’t wait to leave my post here at the Reference Desk and finish the story! It is different from her first two books, which were set during World War II and the post-War period. Almost Home is set in modern-day London and Cambridge, and the heroine is the American Jordan Weiss, who works for the State Department. She’s been away from London since her boyfriend died ten year’s earlier. Her best friend has ALS; she meets with a former Cambridge crew-mate who insists that Jordan’s boyfriend’s death was murder, and somehow it’s all tied to Albanian organized crime and Nazi war criminals. It’s suspenseful, fast-paced and the characters are believable. I highly recommend it.

Our Abraham Lincoln Programming Guide is Now Here
We’ve finalized the programming for this year’s celebrations of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Our brochure lists all the lectures, book discussions and even a bus trip to Gettysburg that we’ve scheduled for 2009. Sign up for any of the lectures by clicking on the Library Events button on our website’s homepage. And start thinking about your entry for the 2nd Annual Edible Book Festival; there’s a special category for Edible Lincoln entries, along with the regular edible book entries that are “bookish” through the use of text, literary inspiration or form. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners!
