The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Team written by Mary Ann Shaffer and her niece Annie Barrows, this book is very hot at the moment with 47 people on its waiting list! The novel takes place in England after WWII. Juliet Ashton, a young author,  finds inspiration for her next novel when she begins corresponding with a man, Dawsey, who lives on Guernsey Island. Through their letters, they become friends and Juliet learns how difficult life was during the war when the Germans occupied Guernsey Island. To trick the Germans, some residents on the island formed a literary society, which Juliet finds intriguing. Juliet makes a trip to the island to meet the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society with wonderful results. Definitely a fun read!

One of my favorite authors, Maria V. Snyder, is coming to the library on Sunday September 28th at 2:00 pm.  She is the author of the trilogy: Poison Study, Magic Study and Fire  Study.  Follow the story of Yelena Zaltana from food taster to the chief of security in Ixia, to a student of magic and finally to becoming a Soulfinder. B&N Explorations says, “Poison Study is both a riveting romance and a spellbinding.”

If you enjoy comedy and romance, watch Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day. In England just before WWII, destitute nanny Miss Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) is desperate for a job and suddenly finds one as a social secretary to a glamorous singer and aspiring actress Delysia (Amy Adams). The rest of the movie is full of fun and laughs as Miss Pettigrew tries to keep up with Delysia and help her juggle her love life. Enjoyable for adults and teenagers! We own six copies at our library, but the movie is very popular, so check at the front desk if you don’t find a copy on the shelf.

A Quick Book Review from Jennifer, part 2

Back in June I read Chelsea Cain’s thriller, Heartsick. Well, the sequal, Sweetheart, has finally arrived and I just finished reading it. I really enjoyed it – what a great yarn!

book jacket

Sweetheart starts soon after Heartsick finished. Detective Archie Sheridan is called to the scene where a body was found in the park. It’s the same park where the first supposed victim of the Beauty Killer, Gretchen Lowell, was found years earlier. Reporter Susan Ward is also there, still trying to publish the story of Senator Castle’s affair with his children’s babysitter. How is this dead body related to the Beauty Killer? How does the Beauty Killer, Gretchen Lowell, get out of jail? Is Archie still obsessed with her? You’ll have to read Sweetheart to discover exactly what happens, and it’s worth the ride. The relationship between Archie and Gretchen is just as intriguing as Hannibal Lector and Clarice Starling from Silence of the Lambs.  I can’t wait to read the next Chelsea Cain thriller.
