Next Monday is Labor Day. Where did the summer go?! Did you finish your required reading for school?!

This week is your last chance to take advantage of Fantastic Fridays, with half-price DVD rentals for feature films. While you’re here, you may want to stock up on reading material, as we’ll be closed August 31 and September 1. The good news about the coming of Labor Day is that we’ll be open on Sundays again beginning September 7, from 1:00PM to 5:00PM.

As you walk in the front of our library, please take a second to glance at the right hand window.  In the window is a lap size quilt (strip quilt design), a tablerunner, and a pillow which we are currently raffling off to raise money for some needed display furniture in the adult reading area. Created by Tricia, one of our reference librarians, these three items are matching and will be raffled off as a set. Only $1.00/ ticket.

Quick Book Review from Jennifer

book jacket  I finished reading Tethered by Amy MacKinnon just before I came into work this afternoon, and I can’t get it out of my head. What a book! Set in the present day, it’s the story of Clara Marsh, an undertaker in a city near Boston, who can’t escape her abusive past, and the people who surround her. You the view the world through Clara’s eyes, as she prepares bodies for viewing, but she can’t stop thinking of Precious Doe, the body of an unknown child discovered 3 years before, that she prepared for burial. How is Precious connected to Trecie, a young girl recently been seen around the funeral home? And why does Clara feel a strange attachment to Trecie? The characters are so well-drawn and realistic I just got completely pulled in to the story. Read Tethered and tell me what you think.

Well, not exactly, but we do have some exciting news. Marple has been awarded a grant by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum to host the traveling exhibit, “Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America”, as part of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial celebration in 2009, for December 2009. We are one of only 40 libraries in the USA to host this exhibit.

“Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America” will showcase the former President’s life and the ways he embraced the notion of self-improvement using reproductions of original documents, artifacts, photographs and more, in seven learning stations that will be placed in our library meeting room.

Look for more information in the coming months, as we’ll be planning lectures, films, book discussions and everything Abraham Lincoln for the next year!
