Marisa de los Santos visits Marple Public Library

We had an awesome turn out for last night’s visit from author Marisa de los Santos! Fifty people came to our library meeting room, books in hand for signing, to hear Marisa speak about the characters from her novels Love Walked In and Belong to Me. She read a bit from the first chapter of Belong to Me, and the words of her character, Cornelia Brown, just flowed like a poem. I know that those attending who hadn’t yet read either book are probably doing so right now!

We were able to take some photos – so here they are.

We can’t wait to invite Marisa back when she’s finished with her next novel.

Lack of interest?

We’ve had to cancel the Second Summer Mix and Mingle for adults scheduled for tonight because we just didn’t have enough people signed up to attend. I really hated to do it, but when you factor in the cost of food and prizes, it just is too expensive to hold a program for 3 attendees and 2 library staff members.

When planning library programs for adults, I always try to have a sign up sheet located at the circulation desk, and recently I’ve placed some sign ups on the Eventkeeper website, so you can just register on-line. If we don’t have enough people signed up, the program is either cancelled or rescheduled.

If you see a poster for an event that looks interesting to you, please sign up! Your interest in library programs keeps me busy planning more events. If you have an idea for a program, please let me know.

Socrates Cafe @ Marple Public Library

Marple has hosted a Socrates Cafe at 10:00AM on the first Monday of each month since April 2006.  At each meeting, I am amazed at what our participants discuss – education, justice, “what is the greatest gift that you can give” – are just a few of the topics we’ve covered. Most of our participants are what I like to call “seasoned citizens”, older adults who have been there and done that and are willing to discuss it with others. It’s the participants who make me want to keep this program going all day long!

Our next Socrates Cafe is on Monday August 4 in the library meeting room. Come and join us as we discuss “what is enough”.

Amish Fiction

As part of my job, I frequently read magazines dealing with authors, books, and current trends in literature.  A recent article highlighted Amish fiction as an increasingly popular genre. This got me curious, so I checked our online catalog and noticed that almost all of Marple’s novels about Amish culture are checked out!

If you are interested in trying this genre, Beverly Lewis, Wanda Brunstetter and Cindy Woodsmall are very popular Amish fiction series writers.  If you already read this genre, send us a comment and let us know what you think!

We’ve just posted the notice for Marple’s second summer Mix and Mingle for Adults, which takes place on Friday July 25. Tricia has created the literary quiz this time, but it’s still multiple choice. And I’ll remember to take pictures this time, too! (I know I promised them from the last one – sorry!) June’s Mix and Mingle brought 18 people to Marple after hours on a Friday and I know that everyone who attended had a fine time. Come and join us on July 25th. You may sign up at the circulation desk or by calling 610-356-1510.

Last night, July 11, was our third month of holding Film Movement @ Marple Public Library. This is an adult program that shows award-winning, first-run independent and foreign films. Attendance has been growing at each showing; last night there were 10 film lovers who watched the Argentinian film XXY. The great thing about Film Movement is that once we show the film to the public, we place it in our collection to check out. Look for XXY to be available sometime next week; August the First and Noise are the two previous films now available for check out. Next month’s film is called Choking Man. We’ll be showing it on August 14 at 7PM. Come and join us for the film and dessert.

4th of July Parade

The library participates in the 4th of July Parade in Marple/ Newtown every other year.  After 11 years of participating every year with my husband as driver, my teen age daughter hiding in the cab of the float (so no one she know sees her) and my youngest daughter making sure the other kids don’t throw all of the candy out before we get to Broomall, I decided to do the library float every other year.  The years we participate are hectic, especially the one when Emma (my 9 year) locked the keys in the truck we had “borrowed” from Videons and we had to call the police.  The years we don’t participate are much less crazy but I always feel like something is missing from the summer.  So this year my family is going to do something we have never done before-watch the parade.  Hope to see you there-it is always a great time.

Happy 4th of July
